Yosemite – September 28
Bike ride in woods/airport
Renting bikes really seems like a nice way to end the trip – kind of a nice symmetry to how we started the trip! Instead of spending the day in the car we are out riding through the forest getting that last dose of forest air. The hotel has a nice supply of rental bikes and helmets, and they even give you a detailed map of the area.
There is a nice dirt road behind the hotel that leads to several hikes, horseback riding and camping. We ride down to the waterfall hike and leave our bikes behind the historic cabin. There is a small canal here and a trail that leads back to the waterfall. It is a short hike but a beautiful one.
This is a wonderful place to sit and just absorb that last dose of vacation bliss. The sound of the water flowing and the chirping birds is really nice. We review some of the highlights of the trip and are very happy with this adventure. Yosemite is a beautiful place, and we are looking forward to a return trip when the snowmelt is flowing. We hear that May and June are the best time of year to see this.
We stick to our routine of picnic lunches and have a light lunch out by the pool. There is just enough time to fit in a couple games of Bananagrams before we have to head toward the airport. But we have one more stop to make before the trip is truly over.
Since we are heading back the same way we came, we have to stop at Casa de Fruita. We want more chocolate-covered cherries and pears! We do stop and pick up some treats, but it is so hot out (110°) that all the chocolates are melted together! There really is no way to bag them up without having one big melted mess later. We are so disappointed (between snacks it is all that we talked about)! We did get another great breakfast in the afternoon, but I’ll be going online to get some of those chocolates!
